This FAQ explains what to do if you need a new property structure such as Projects, and you want it to work like existing WPResidence taxonomies such as City, Area, Category, or Status.

Can I Add a New Custom Taxonomy?

WPResidence does not include an option in Theme Options to create a new property taxonomy and make it work exactly like the built-in theme taxonomies.

For example, adding a new taxonomy called Projects and making it work like Area requires custom development.

A new custom taxonomy must be integrated with:

  • Property edit settings
  • Property submission forms
  • Advanced search fields
  • Property filters
  • Taxonomy archive pages
  • Property lists
  • Theme layouts and templates

This is not covered by theme support because it changes how the theme works.

Existing WPResidence Property Taxonomies

WPResidence already includes several property taxonomies that are integrated with the theme.

Common property taxonomies include:

  • Property Category
  • Property Action
  • City
  • Area
  • County / State
  • Property Status
  • Features and Amenities

These taxonomies already work with the theme structure, search, filters, archives, and property pages.

If you need a structure such as Projects, the recommended solution is to use one of the existing taxonomies that you are not using for another purpose.

For example, you can use:

  • Property Status
  • Property Category
  • Area
  • Another available taxonomy that fits your website structure

You can then rename or use that taxonomy as Projects in your site content.

This is the safest option because the taxonomy is already connected to the WPResidence logic.

Yes, if you use an existing WPResidence taxonomy for Projects.

For example, if you use Property Status or another existing taxonomy as Projects, you can add that taxonomy field to the search form, depending on your search setup.

This allows visitors to filter properties by that taxonomy, the same way they filter by other supported property taxonomies.

Important: A completely new custom taxonomy will not automatically appear in the WPResidence search form. It must be added and integrated with custom development.

Can Project Pages Use the Same Layout as Area Pages?

If Projects are created by using an existing WPResidence taxonomy, the theme can use the existing taxonomy archive structure.

You can also create a custom layout for taxonomy pages with WPResidence Studio and Elementor Free.

This lets you control the design used for property category or taxonomy archive pages.

Show Taxonomy Description on the Frontend

WordPress allows you to add a description when creating or editing a taxonomy term.

For example, you can add a description for:

  • City
  • Area
  • Category
  • Status
  • Any existing taxonomy term used as Projects

To add a description:

  1. Go to the taxonomy section in wp-admin.
  2. Edit the term, for example a City, Area, or Project term.
  3. Add the text in the Description field.
  4. Save the term.

If the selected archive layout or template displays the taxonomy description, it will show on the frontend.

If the current layout does not show the description where you need it, you can create or edit the taxonomy archive design with WPResidence Studio, or use custom development.

When Custom Development Is Needed

Custom development is needed if you want to create a completely new taxonomy such as Projects and make it work exactly like the built-in Area taxonomy.

This includes custom integration with:

  • Admin property settings
  • Frontend property submission
  • Advanced search
  • Taxonomy archive pages
  • Property filters
  • Theme templates
