FAQ: Why do I see 2 description fields on category or taxonomy pages

8 views 0

Why do I see 2 description fields on category or taxonomy pages in WpResidence?

This usually happens because the website has:

  • the default WordPress taxonomy description field
  • a second SEO description field added by an SEO plugin such as Rank Math

The WordPress taxonomy description is standard WordPress functionality. Taxonomies support a built-in description field by default.

Does WpResidence add duplicate description fields?

No.

In WpResidence, the theme uses the standard WordPress taxonomy description field.

If you see a second description editor, it is usually added by an SEO plugin, not by the theme.

What is the difference between the 2 description fields?

They are usually meant for different purposes:

  • The WordPress description field is used for the visible content of the taxonomy or archive page.
  • The SEO plugin description field is used for the SEO meta description that search engines may read.

For example, Rank Math adds SEO controls for taxonomies and can show its own SEO description field there.

Why can this create an SEO issue?

An SEO issue can happen if both systems output a meta description in the page source.

In that case, search engines may see duplicated or conflicting meta description tags, which is not the recommended setup.

What is the correct setup?

The recommended setup is:

  • Use the WordPress taxonomy description for the visible archive page text.
  • Use the SEO plugin description only for the SEO meta description.

You should avoid using both fields for the same purpose.

How can I avoid duplicate descriptions?

You can use one of these solutions:

Option 1
Keep the WordPress taxonomy description for the page content, and leave the SEO plugin description empty.

Option 2
Keep the SEO plugin description for SEO, and adjust the WordPress description so it is used only as visible page content.

Option 3
If you do not want SEO fields on taxonomies, check your SEO plugin settings. In Rank Math, taxonomy SEO controls can be managed from Titles & Meta, including the option to enable or disable SEO controls for taxonomies.

Should the WordPress description field be removed?

No.

The WordPress taxonomy description field is standard WordPress functionality and should remain.

The issue is usually not the existence of that field, but how the SEO plugin is configured to output meta descriptions on the front end.

Is this a WpResidence bug?

Not usually.

If 2 description editors appear, this is generally caused by the combination of:

  • the standard WordPress taxonomy description field
  • an SEO plugin that adds its own taxonomy SEO description field

What should I check first?

First, check which SEO plugin is active.

If you use Rank Math, review the taxonomy settings in:

Rank Math SEO > Titles & Meta

Then verify whether the plugin is adding its own taxonomy SEO description in addition to the default taxonomy description.

In short

WpResidence uses the standard WordPress taxonomy description.

If you see a second description field, it is usually added by an SEO plugin.

To avoid SEO duplication, use:

  • one field for visible page content
  • one field for SEO meta description only
